Distressed clothing is one of the few topics that can unite streetwear bosses, rural Facebook moms, and everyone in between in a state of mass confusion. We’ve seen it time and time again, from Gucci’s grass-stained denim to Maison Margiela’s glue-leaking running sneakers.
Inevitably, it’s Balenciaga that goes further than everyone else. Creative director Demna Gvasalia rarely strays from the headlines and her eye-catching latest act is a pair of limited-edition sneakers that are completely destroyed. Naturally, the internet was immediately ablaze with furious comments and the shoes even got the Salvation Army cheering.
Online comments must not have reached Justin Bieber, as his most recent stage outfit featured a pair of jeans from the luxury fashion house that are almost as ridiculous as these sneakers.
Giant rips in the front and back of both legs made the singer’s tights pretty useless to protect his legs, everything from the bottom of his boxers to the top of his socks could be seen.
We’ve affectionately dubbed the 28-year-old “baggy Bieber” for his Y2K-inspired oversized look that includes wide-leg jeans, but this pair takes it to new lengths. I don’t even think 80s punks had such big rips in their pants.
This fuels a trend we spotted in the FW22 shows of models walking down the runway looking like they’ve been beaten. Whether in the form of ragged clothes with raw hems or models with fake bruises on their faces, the novelty of seeing messy clothes (and models) in high fashion shows no signs of going away.
We’ve rounded up some of our favorite distressed clothes to come out of Rick Owens, Needles and Marni. Scroll down to buy the parts and decide where you draw the line for something too distressed.

Sneakers have been a favorite of distressed designers long before this Balenciaga pair. Gucci, Maison Margiela, Golden Goose… they’ve all been there. These are the worn pairs that we would actually buy.

Bieber’s pair might go a little overboard, but ripped jeans are a classic. Made popular by skateboarders and punk rockers, the style has become a staple of contemporary fashion.
There’s something inherently cool about wearing a vintage moth-bitten t-shirt and the designers are more than aware of that. Check out how they create a similar effect with distress below.
The final piece to creating a complete distressed outfit, throw one of these sweaters over everything to become a master of wabi-sabi fashion.
